ABOUT
LI WALLIS
Li Wallis is a filmmaker whose work blends visual artistry with a global perspective, exploring mysteries, ecological issues, and the tensions between science and nature. Raised in the American South, she began her career in journalism, reporting on human-interest stories before moving to Europe to pursue fine-art painting. Her path soon expanded into humanitarian filmmaking and photography, documenting communities across Africa, South America, and Asia—a body of work that earned her Special Consultative Status with the United Nations ECOSOC and membership in the Clinton Global Initiative.
Driven by curiosity about human experience and the natural world, Wallis turned to narrative filmmaking to explore complex ethical and ecological questions. She honed her craft through an ambitious year-long project producing one short film per week, developing a distinctive style defined by meticulous lighting, bold color palettes, deliberate composition, and immersive sound design.
Her debut feature, Flights of Reverie, is a Berlin-set mystery-drama examining humanity versus nature, wildlife trafficking, and the ethics of DNA manipulation. Through her company, Midnight Odyssey Productions, Wallis creates films that combine striking visuals, compelling music, and thought-provoking storytelling, engaging audiences while establishing her as a director with a clear thematic voice and a commitment to stories that matter.
Her next film, The Assembly, is a political chamber drama in which powerful elites secretly plan a global population-control program, only to confront the collapse of their own lives in the process.
Director’s
Statement
My debut feature, Flights of Reverie, is an atmospheric, character-driven mystery rooted in questions of humanity versus nature. The film weaves together themes of transformation, resistance, and evolution, exploring society’s fractured relationship with the environment through a band of strange misfits who dare to push it into a new era.
Coming from a background in journalism, fine art, and humanitarian filmmaking, I’ve always been drawn to stories that uncover hidden tensions — between science and nature, tradition and progress, human ambition and environmental limits.
This film grew out of that impulse. Its foreboding visual language, slow and deliberate camera movements, and unnerving sound design were all crafted to heighten a sense of unease, while a bold color palette and haunting score bring emotional depth to the characters and their journeys.
Berlin plays a central role, not just as a backdrop but as a living presence in the film. After shooting in more than 40 locations across the city, I’ve tried to capture an insider’s perspective of a place that has captivated me for years — a place whose layered history mirrors the themes of secrecy, evolution, and reinvention at the heart of the story.
I felt compelled to make Flights of Reverie because these questions — about evolution, environmental fragility, and the ethics of progress — are urgent and deeply personal to me. This film is only the beginning. My next project will expand these ideas on a larger scale, building on the same core themes of nature versus humanity, government-sanctioned secrecy, and the mythic search for what comes after us.
